Joe Satriani mengawali kariernya sebagai guru gitar. Sejumlah muridnya berhasil menjelma menjadi nama-nama tenar di blantika musik seperti Steve Vai dan Kirk Hammet. Sebagai gitaris solo, ia sering menjadi gitaris tur musisi rock terkenal lainnya. Pada 1988 ia pernah menjadi gitaris untuk tur solo pertama Mick Jagger. Ia juga pernah menjalani tur dengan Deep Purple mengisi posisi gitaris utama. Sepanjang perjalanan bermusiknya, sebagai gitaris solo, Joe Satriani yang telah berkarya sejak era 1980-an ini telah menjual lebih dari 10 juta copy album instrumental di seluruh dunia.
